 MAMMOPLASTY AUGMENTATION

The female breast has always had and currently has a great significance in the life of women’s relationship, this is why it is of vital importance the presence of a nice breast with an appropriate size and shape.
Many women possess as their own characteristics a small or slightly flaccid breast and many others, due to circumstances such as pregnancy or significant slimming, lose consistency in their breasts. All these cases are overcome with a simple and safe surgery, the Mammoplasty Augmentation which is one of the plastic surgeries that most advanced in recent years.

What does it involve?

It is a surgical operation through which an implantation of prosthesis corrects the mammary volume of the patient. It is possible to increase the breast one or several sizes.
An exploration of the breast to assess the appropriate size, the natural form of the breast and firmness and quality of the skin is carried out. A complete preoperative is required and in some cases a mammography study. The anesthesia used is a general one with a short duration, since the operation lasts about an hour. The admission to the clinic is needed, being discharged on the following day. The implant or breast prosthesis can be placed behind the pectoral muscle or in front of it, that is to say behind the mammary gland. The technique to be used is evaluated depending on the figure and anatomy of the patient. In most cases we place the prosthesis behind the pectoral muscle.
To place the prosthesis several approaches, which require very small incisions, can be used. These approaches may be through an incision in the armpit, through an incision around the breast areola or at a sub-breast furrow level, which was the first to be used.
If the size of the areola of the patient permits, the approach most used is around the areola, since being semicircular and due to the change of skin color the scar is almost invisible within a few months. Through the incision chosen the breast tissue is lifted, establishing a pocket and the prosthesis is then placed.

What material are the breast prostheseis made of?

There are several materials that have been used in the breast prosthesis, like silicone, physiological saline, hydro-gel, PVP, polyurethane and others. The prosthesis used these days is the silicone cohesive gel that is approved by the Ministry of Health and Consumption for its implementation. There are several reasons which led to the choice of this material, mainly through more than 30 years of experience in implantation, and its touch is the most similar to a natural breast. There are currently more than 20 million patients with this type of prosthesis.

How long can it last?

The prosthesis today has a minimum foreseeable duration of about 25 to 30 years, and it may last perfectly well throughout the life of the patient without the slightest alteration.

Is it possible to breast-feed after a breast augmentation?

Yes, absolutely. A breast augmentation increase does not prevent later breastfeeding nor does the silicone entail any risk to the infant.

Can the breast prosthesis contribute to a greater breast cancer?

No. It has been demonstrated that the chances of a patient with prosthesis having a breast cancer is the same as if you did not have it. The silicone prosthesis is totally safe, and nowadays the fears that aimed at the risk of causing disease in the immune system (defenses of the organism) have now been dispelled, doubts that in 1992 resulted in the preventive withdrawal of these implants by the FDA (the agency that controls the medicine in the United States).
Those with prosthesis have also the guarantee of an early detection of breast cancer, since it does not prevent the realization of mammography and ultrasound.
The confidence in the silicone prosthesis has helped the development of the materials used.

Can there be any complications with the prosthesis?

The possible complication that may exist with the prosthesis is known as capsular contracture. It occurs when the internal scar that is formed around the implant shrinks in excess, making the breast become harder. This depends on the internal scarring of the patient. The capsular retraction can be treated at times by removing the scar, and in higher degrees changing the prosthesis again. With the advances of the surgical techniques and the high quality and safety of the prosthesis it is very rare that it happens.

Is this operation painful?

The post-operative breast-augmentation pain is mild or moderate and is solved with a mild analgesia. In general, it is no longer necessary to take painkillers after the third or fourth day. The inconvenience is generally caused by the bandage, rather than by the operation itself. In the first two weeks the breasts feel swollen and decrease toward the third week. On the other hand, in the first two months there is a certain hardness of the prosthesis, getting softer from the third month onwards and achieving its final soft touch between six and eight months. Physical efforts cannot be carried out during the first three or four weeks.
