Gynecomasty or abnormal growth of the breasts is a disorder that is more common each day, affecting between 40 to 60 per cent of the male population. This pathology have been associated with certain drugs or medical disorders, however, in most of the cases there is no reason to explain the appearance of this disorder in the men.
What does it involve?
The increase in volume of the breasts in men can be caused by the accumulation of fat or by an excessive and abnormal development of the mammary gland that usually atrophy in man. For this reason to be able to determine the origin of the development of the breast, the patient must first carry out a mammography and an ultrasound scan of the breasts so that we can determine the most suitable technique in each case.
The operation is performed with general or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the technique used, with admission to the clinic of only a few hours. If the excess of glandular tissue is the cause of the gynecomasty, the scalpel will get dry in an incision at the level of the areola. Through this incision the excess of glandular tissue, fat and skin are removed. It is true that with the new liposuction cannulae that we use, if the gland is not too large, it is not common to make any incision in the areola. If the gynecomasty is caused by excess of fat, the liposuction is used as a surgical technique. This is performed through a small incision of approximately one centimeter near the edge of the areola, using a cannula connected to an aspiration machine. In this way the aspiration of the fat of the breast is carried out improving your body outline. There is sometimes a need to combine the two surgical techniques to obtain optimum results.
When can you have a normal life?
The gynecomasty requires a work leave of four to five days, being from 10 to 14 days for patients accustomed to physical effort. After the operation one should wear a compressive bandage during a month. It is normal to feel some inflammation and some mild discomfort, symptoms that disappear with the administration of some painkillers and anti-inflammatory. Also, the sensitivity of the nipple decreases during a couple of months, normalizing completely after this period. The results of a gynecomasty are very satisfactory and definitive, eliminating an aesthetic problem that creates many complexes in the people who suffer from it.
